Course description
This course is designed to develop students' proficiency and communication in Modern Standard Arabic in the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Elementary Arabic I introduces students to:
  • Sound and writing systems of Arabic
  • Basic grammar
  • Basic vocabulary
  • Basic sentence structures of Arabic

In order to be able to:
  • Participate in basic conversational exchanges
  • Understand native speakers accustomed to dealing with non-native speakers of Arabic
  • Write notes, short letters and compositions describing daily events or personal experiences
  • Read basic texts on familiar topics such as weather, seasons, food, family, studies and friends. Emphasis is placed on the functional use of language in the four basic skills. Cultural aspects are fully integrated in the course and are introduced through audio-visual materials.

  • Two blank tapes

Requirements
  • Regular attendance, active class participation, daily assignments, five tests and a final.
