Course description

This course is designed to further develop students' proficiency and communication in Modern Standard Arabic in the four basic skills. At the intermediate level, more emphasis is placed on reading and writing skills than at the elementary level. The course introduces students to a wide variety of styles and genres from the classical and modern periods through authentic texts. It also continues to help develop students' listening and speaking skills through the use of authentic audio-video materials. Arabic is the medium of instruction and communication.

• Al-Kitaab fi Ta'allum al-Arabiyya: A textbook for Arabic, Part II, by Brutad, Al-Batal & Al-Tonsi. Georgetown University Press, 1997
• The Hans-Wehr Dictionary of Moden Standard Arabic
• Audio and video tapes housed in the Ermal Garinger Academic Resource Center
• One blank tape

Prerequisites

• Arabic 210 (Intermediate Arabic, Part I) or the equivalent. New students are required to take a placement test.
  
  

Requirements

• Regular attendance, active class participation, daily assignments, four tests and a final.

• Class participation/discussions: 20%
• Presentations: 10%
• Daily homework: 30%
• Tests: 20%
• Final exam: 20%
